The web page image shows two x-ray radiographs. The upper is the famous
image taken by Rontgen of his wife's hand in 1895. Rontgen won the first
Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 for the discovery of x-rays. The lower
radiograph was taken of a hand "phantom" using a new microfabricated
field emitter array x-ray source. This source is being developed to
increase the speed and reliability of tomographic medical imaging
systems. The first application of the new source will be in mammography.
Relative to conventional mammography, tomographic systems significantly
improve upon the accuracy of screening and diagnostic procedures.
